Carmel Apple Bars

Ingredients

Crust

  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 cup old fashioned or quick cooking oats
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Filling

  • 4 1/2 cup coarsely peeled baking apples
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 1 pkg caramels (14 oz)
  • 3 tbsp butter or margarine

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, cream butter, shortening, and brown sugar until fluffy.
  • Add flour, oats, salt, and baking soda.
  • Mix well.
  • Stir in pecans.
  • Set aside 2 cups.
  • Press the remaining oat mixture into the bottom of an ungreased 13 X 9-inch baking pan.
  • For Filling, toss apples with flour.
  • Spoon over crust.
  • In a saucepan, melt the caramels and butter over low heat.
  • Drizzle over the apples.
